Biography
Name and Parents
Humphrey Hill appears in three tables in the 1623 Visitation of Shropshire. He appears most prominently in the Table Hill of Court of Hill where he appears as Humfridus Hull vulgo Hill de Buntingsdale, son of Gruffithus Hull de Hull in co Salop and his wife Margaretta soror Gruffithi Warren de Ightfeld in co Salop. [1]
In the Table Stuche of Stycle he appears as Humfridus Hill de Buntingesdale, son of Griffithus Hill and grandson of Willimus Hill.[2]
In the Table Bromley where he is the father-in-law of a Bromley descendant, he is referred to simply as Humfry Hill of Blore & Huntingsdale. [3]
1410 Birth Estimates
Burke and Ormerod estimate Humphrey Hill's birth as, say, 1410 in Shropshire, England, the son of Griffith Hull and Margaret Warren. [4][2]
Burke states that 'Humphrey Hill, of Buntingdale [son of Griffith Hull and Margaret Warren], ... lived in the reigns of Henry V and Henry VI . [4]. Estimate that he "flourished" at the midpoint of that period -- 1437. If he was 30 when he "flouished" he would have been born about 1407, which is consistent with other estimates of his birth year.

1434 Marriage and Malpas Descent
Say 1434 [6] he married Agnes Bird, daughter of John Bird and Alice de Malpas. Agnes was born, say, 1414, probably in Cheshire, England. [4][2]
Ormerod notes that Humphrey Hill married Agnes, daughter and coheiress of John Bird, by his wife Alice, one of the daughters and coheirs of David de Malpas of Hampton. [7]
Burke reports that Humphrey Hill married Agnes, daughter and co-heir of John Bird, and cousin and heiress of David de Malpas, ...' [4]
The Visitation shows Humfridus Hull vulgo Hill de Buntingsale = Agnes fil. Et cohaer. Joh’s Bird consanguinis et haeres Davidi de Malpas[1]
Humphrey Hill, father of Thomas Hill, married Anne, or Agnes, daughter and Co-heir of John Bird of Charlton by the niece and heiress of David David de Malpas. Humphrey Hill, or Hull, as the name was formerly spelt, was the son of Griffith Hull of Bintingsdale and Wlonkeslow by Margaret, or Mary, sister of Griffith Warren of Ightfield, son of William Hull, the son of Hugh Hull of Hull by Eleanor, daughter and heir of Hugh de Wlonkeslow. [8]
Ormerod notes that Sir Rowland Hill on his coat of arms had added, on a conton, the coat of Malpas of Hampton, of which family he was a representative, his grandfather Humphrey Hill, having married Agnes, daughter and coheiress of John Bird, by his wife Alice, one of the daughters and coheirs of David de Malpas of Hampton. [9]
1461 Death
Humphrey Hill died about 1461 in Buntingdale, Shropshire. [10]
Issue
Humphrey and Agnes had several children: [11]
In the absence of concrete data, and in order to accomodate other relationships, suggested birth year estimates below add 10 years to the estimate in "we relate."
Children of Humphrey Hill cannot be born after his death in 1461. Births close to his death raise the question of who raised the family after his death, and how his widow survived.

Research Notes
Birth Year Estimates from Less Reliable Sources
The LDS Pedigree resource file shows Humphrey Hill born 1404 in Hodnet, Shropshire, England. Another web site shows him born about 1410 in Buntingdale, Shropshire. [10]
The "Our Family History" site shows him as the son of Griffith Hill, Griffith being born in 1372 in Hodnet, Shropshire, England and died in Buntingdale, Shropshire, England and of Margaret Warren, b. 1398, Lightfield, , Shropshire, England and died, Buntingdale, Shropshire, England [10]
Marriage Year Estimaes from Less Reliable Sources
A Hill family genealogy suggests 1429 as the year of the marriage, in Buntingdale, Shropshire. "He married Agnes Bird, b. 1410, of, Metley, Stafford, England d. , Buntingdale, Shropshire, England." [12]
"Our Family Histories" gives estimated birth years for the children beginning in 1435 and extending to 1445; based on this, an estimated year of the marriage would be 1434, when Agnes would have been 24. This is not unreasonable, but it places the births of the family too early in other relationships. Therefore it is suggested that the marriage and births took place around 10 years later.
Relations
David David de Malpas was the uncle of the wife of John Bird of Charlton. A reference to the Egerton pedigree shows that Roger, natural son of Sir William de Malpas, had issue David, father of David of Bickerton and Hampton, who married Katherine, daughter of Hugh de Bickerton. They had issue John, whose son, David, died without issue, thus leaving his aunts his coheirs.[8]
Hugh de Bickerton was the father of Katherine, who married David of Bickerton and Hampton, whose father David was the son of Roger, natural son of Sir William de Malpas.[8]
