Notes

Note 1

!Note: Thomas Hawkins [b. ~1450] was a Kentish landholder active over several decades, with properties in Lewisham, Plaistow, and Ash. His name appears in three separate Kent wills [1501, 1507, 1534], suggesting ongoing legal and property activity into old age. He likely retired to Chesham, Buckinghamshire, in the 1530s to live under the care of his grandsons John Hawkins Jr. and William Hawkins, both residents there by 1541.

His burial on 3 October 1541 in Chesham, alongside the baptism [25 Sept] and burial [3 Oct] of Thomas, son of William, supports the hypothesis that the infant was named in his honor shortly before his passing.

A transcriber note in the England Births & Baptisms index combines the child's baptism and death — however, parish register structure confirms two separate entries, one for Thomas son of William Hawkes baptized 25 Sep 1541, and the other for Thomas Hawkes buried 3 Oct 1541. This reinforces the interpretation of a generational overlap.

!Note: 1539–1542 in England - Context:

This period saw major disruption from the Dissolution of the Monasteries, which shuttered not just religious houses but also church-run hospitals, schools, and poor relief. The fallout from the Pilgrimage of Grace led to executions and heightened tension in the north. Combined with land seizures, Cromwell’s fall, royal instability, and sporadic disease outbreaks, the result was widespread displacement, hardship, and family fragmentation. These conditions likely explain the high rate of early deaths, remarriages, and child relocations during this time.
