STAC 8 - Court of Star Chamber: Proceedings, James I

Reference: STAC 8/172/23

Description:

Short title: Hesketh v Powes.

Defendants: Richard Powes son and heir of Humphry Powes, James Blackway, and Richard Mackworth.

Subject: Forgery of an ential of land in Cockshutt, Crosemere, and Kenwick, in the occupation of plaintiff Robert Hesketh, the reversion belonging to Susan Heskith his daughter-in-law, cousin of the said Richard Mackworth.

Shropshire.

Barnes category: forgery.

Another action was also brought before the Court of Common Pleas

Date: 1617 October

Held by: The National Archives, Kew

Legal status: Public Record

Closure status: Open Document, Open Description

Notes: The Mackworth family was centered just south of Shrewsbury at Betton Strange. However, the lands Susan stood to inherit were in the Ellesmere area of North Shropshire. This suggests her branch of the “Powys” family moved north while maintaining strong ties to the Shrewsbury-based Mackworths.
