Dame Jane Hoghton widow of Robert Hesketh

held Martholme and the Great Harwood estate at

the commencement of the Civil War. In 1647 they

were sequestered for her alleged recusancy, but on

appeal to the barons of the Exchequer she cleared

herself of the charge. Robert Hesketh, jun., brother

and heir of the late Thomas Hesketh, had leased the

lands from her for {£92 6s. sd. perannum. In 1651

her estate was again secured by the County Commis-

sioners on pretence of her delinquency for engaging

with the King of Scots. The year following she

sought to contract for two-thirds of her estate here

and in Tottleworth, worth £67 per annum. Mart-

holme Mill formed part of the sequestered estate.

The weir, being decayed, had been repaired and

raised by the County Committee. In 1651 Robert

Cunliffe of Sparth claimed damages for injury caused

to his land, which lay on the south side of the

weir, by flooding due to the elevation of the

weir. John Molyneux, who had married Lucy

relict of Robert Hesketh, occupied part of Mart-

holme Hall in 1666, the tenant of the demesne

lands, Widow Mercer, occupying the remainder.

Thomas Hesketh paid land tax in 1788 amount-

ing to £2 19s. 8d. upon lands lying in the higher

division only.”

Biography

Notables Project

Robert Hesketh is Notable.

Robert Hesketh of Martholme Hall; was born at Rufford Hall, Rufford, East Lancashire, England in about 1580. [1] [2] [3]

Robert Hesketh was the fourth son of Robert Hesketh Esq. and his first wife, Mary Stanley. Mary was the daughter of Sir George Stanley of Crosse Hall, Lathom Parish, Lancashire. [4][5]

— Siblings

From History of Parliament[6]; Father Hesketh, Robert [1560-1620], of Rufford and Martholme, Lancashire had the following children: Roberts Mother, Wife One Mary [Marie] Stanley :

John Hesketh

Mary Hesketh

Jane Stanley

Elizabeth Stanley

Mary Stanley

Richard Stanley

Bridget Stanley

Thomas Hesketh

Holcroft [Hesketh], [Rostorne], Dodsworth

Henry Hesketh

George Hesketh

Jane Hesketh

Siblings to Stepmother Two Blanche Twiford : Blanche was the daughter and coheiress of Henry Twiford of Kenwick, Shropshire and widow of William Stopford [7]

No Issue.

Siblings to Stepmother Three Jane Spencer Jane was the daughter of Thomas Spencer of Rufford, after Robert's fathers decease she married Sir Richard de Hoghton and moved away from Martholme.

Robert Hesketh

— Marriage

Robert Hesketh married Margaret [Mary] Standish, daughter of Alexander Standish of Standish in Lancashire.[8]and Elizabeth Hawarden of Lancashire [9][10]

— Children of this Marriage

Mentioned in his will : Hesketh Wills

Thomas [his eldest son]

Edward

Margarett

Alexander

Robert predeceased his father; died 1651]Robt was buried on 31 August 1651 in Croston, Lancashire, England.[11]

Robert's connections extended to those Members of Parliament [through his father] who were influential. These connection were to prove invaluable when in 1652, Robert faced sequestration. He was saved by the faithfull faithful support of Alexander Rigby of Middleton, [a prominent member of the Long Parliament]; Roberts son had married Alexander Rigby's daughter Lucy. Also; Matthew Dodsworth, who was Sir Robert's brother-in-law and whose son Lawrence Dodsworth married Robert's sister Holcrofte. Rigby also had connections with Lord Fairfax, a significant leader of the Parliamentarian party. It is suggested in The Manor of Rufford by Proctor [12]

Following the death of his elder brother, Thomas, in 1646, Thomas died in November 1646 and was buried in St. Mary the Virgin Churchyard, Rufford, West Lancashire District, Lancashire, England.[13]Robert Hesketh assumed leadership of the Hesketh family [14]

— Martholme Hall, Great Harwood, Lancashire - Hesketh seat[15]Stands on the banks of the River Calder and is located 1 and a 1/4 miles from Great Harwood, Lancashire. After the Civil War the Hesketh family, as Catholics, were heavily fined, losing much of their land at Great Harwood. As a result, Martholme was neglected. It is now a private residence but much of the house has been demolished. [16]It has been designated a Grade I listed building by English Heritage on the 11 July 1966. Martholme is constructed, to a T-shaped floor plan, of sandstone rubble, now rendered, with a slate roof. [17]It was originally surrounded by a moat, of which there are still traces The 16th-century gatehouse is also built of sandstone, with slate roofs. [18].

Death

— Robert died in January 1653 at Houghwick Mannor, Hesketh, Lancashire, England and was buried at St. Mary the Virgin Churchyard, Rufford, West Lancashire District, Lancashire, England.[19]

Will of Robert Hesketh His will was dated 9 Sep 1654 and passed probate on 6 Mar 1654[20]A full transcript of the will can be found at Free Space Profile page Hesketh Wills .

— Land,Tenements, Pastures, Fields, Water Courses As a biographical observation, and from searching through hundreds of National Archives entries, Robert Hesketh Gent; was able to tenaciously not only hold onto his assetts but enhance them more fold over those that he inherited as Heir after brother Thomas; Heir to his father in the first instance. Too exhaustive to mention here, but a search of National Archives UK will provide ample results for the curious. Of note many tennements were offered to widow's at Lease for Life; or Peppercorn rents. This may somewhat explain his not leaving money for the Poor in his Will as he was more inclined to arrange his gifting prior to his decease. Certainly, we see from the evidential trail of documentation a legacy of gifting to his children well prior to their One and Twenty Years. He also, very soundly; provided for daughter's and son's prior to marriage by documenting legally a Marriage Endownment ; arrangement of a dowry in similar terms.

— Research Notes

— The Will As a research note the Will depicted inTranscript is definitely that of this Robert and not his father Robert. Proven by the dates. His father definitely died [proven by citation] in 1620. There is no possibility that his will would have been written in 1654.

Other proof of correct will : The referral in this Bio cited regarding inlaws Rigby and Dodsworth and in the background Fairfax [not mentioned here] but certainly Rigby and Dodsworth both Parliamentarian's is why the reference to supporting Parliament and sequestrianism is mentioined yes its misleading, thinking it refers more to his father [Robert MP]; however in this instance 100% the Will in transcript is this Robert. His father Will recorded in it parsons commemoration and Monumental Inscriptions unlike this his father Robert's Will[21]

Also further corroboration of this will is that Robert in his will refers to Alexander Standish Kinsman he is the father of his wife Margaret [Mary] Standish. Edward his father in law was always witness to mamny of his giftings., we see another instance of this in one of mny hundreds of giftings in this lease for 3 x lives [22]

Second Wife It's fairly certain that Robert Hesketh had another wife Marget Breykellwas the maiden name but I cant find a reliable source, will look after Connectathon.

— Sibling Notes

Sibling Richard Stanley [d. 1640][23]

Sibling Jane Hesketh the youngest [m. William Reynolds at Croston] [Richard Ashton, Esq.]

Sibling George Hesketh baptised 22 Jul 1578

Mary Hesketh Sibling appears to have married Thomas Stanley a first cousin of Roberts via his wife a Stanley also [Mary Hesketh [m. Thomas Stanley] b. 1583 ]

Sibling George Hesketh [m. Jane Sherbourne][24]

Sibling Thomas Hesketh[b. 1572, or 1586 m. Susan Powes]

— Bastardy Robert also appears in Court Records on a charge of bastardy on Susan Maudesley in 1640. Bought about in Leyland Hundred, against Robert Hesketh husbandman but certainly applicable to this Robert as he is attributed to the restoration of Holmeswood Hall located in Leyland Hundred in 1539.[25][26]15 May 1650 Robert Hesketh and Robert Mawdesley were in contract for exchange of land - I wonder if this is the father of Susan Maudesley?[27]and this 27 May 1620 [28][29]

— Widow Maud Nelson of Mawdesleye Quit Claim 13 May 1598[30]

Benchmark Legacies of Robert Hesketh to family examples

Robert Hesketh tutored his son in his legacy of gifting to family using 2 or 3 x lifetime leases for 20 shillings and less - Here we have his son Robert as a witness and participant to the gifting., this example can be replicated in many hundreds of other giftings. [31]
