Note 1
!Stylename: [Hull] / Hill / Harris, Johannis [~1442-?]
!Note: The Shropshire visitation records only John Hill in this generation, omitting his brother Sir Thomas Hill, Lord Mayor of London. This supports the identification of John Hill with the later Hill alias Harris line. Sir Thomas’s will names both “brother John Hill” and “Thomas Harris,” indicating that the family’s alias was already active. The visitation likely captured John under his local form , while Thomas’s London branch retained the Hill name.
!Note: On the Hill / Hull name.
This probably started with Hawkswood. The common scribal abbreviation would be Hauks or even Hask. If the scribe used a long “s” or “ſ”, which can look a lot like an “l” and minimized the “k” flourish, and as also happened a lot, barely wrote the “a”, these can end up looking exactly like Hill or Hull. At some point they likely looked at the written name and decided to use it. Of course the manor may have been on a slight hill as well.

Note: John Hill and his wife Marion match the people and circumstances of the record, while no known Hawkins, Hotchkiss, or Hodgkinson couple fits the same place and time. The spelling “Hoggekyn” likely reflects a scribal variation of related Hawkeswood family names. Once the other possibilities are tested and eliminated, the Hill/Harris family remains the only identification that fits the evidence.
