Notes: 1. Hawk, Hawkes, etc. are standard Scribal abbreviations for names sounding like Hotchkiss.
2. Byram, Knottingley, UK is 18 miles from All Hallows Church, Bardsey, Leeds LS17 9DH, United Kingdom,
which at the time could have been basically the same thing.
3. Margaret Hochkys entrusted to equitably distribute a set sum among unnamed servants/dependents/kinsfolk, per Roger’s prior verbal instructions,
likely not by a set amount but by need to accomplish certain goals.
4. Apparently someone, scribe or Roger, wasn't used to the word
niece and made up their own with a Latin style continuation mark: s-oughtir.
5. The Weith & Swell. The loss [whither] and gain [swell] of the land. — i.e., the yield, for better or worse.
6. Legal comment states that all lawful fees are already accounted for above.
7. Roger Brat, Roger's brother-in-law, receives the working lease of the land, but subject to Jane’s lifetime rights. He manages and profits
from it as tenant, paying Jane her dues; the "god pay" or "earnest money" here functions as the token of the lease, not the entirety of his
obligation.
8. his chaff and by. Chaff is the husks or waste of the threshing. By is the produce or grain produced "by" the threshing. The later
English term “by-product” shifted the meaning toward something secondary or inferior, which may seem contradictory to modern readers.
9. Roger's comments regarding parol and instructions given orally to his executors emphasize that such instructions exist beyond the written will.
10. "to the safe and intent of this my last will" means "for the secure establishment and declared purpose of this my last will.”
11. Those named as the "man" of a landed family were typically younger sons, daughters, or close relatives who remained with the family estate,
often managing property or serving as stewards while the principal heir or patriarch was away. Ric's son's man is to hold the lease transfer until
the father dies, so that it goes directly to the son as was common in that time.
