Notes

Note 1

!Note: Ellen Hawkins is named in the 1538 will of Aves Bocher of Egham, Surrey, as her “cousin,” receiving a pied black and white cow. Ellen’s exact age is unstated, but the nature of the bequest and context of the will suggest she was likely a young woman or older girl at the time—possibly born around 1524. Her placement as a granddaughter of John Hawkins, clothier of Leatherhead and Midhurst [~1490 - ~1539] and daughter of George Hawkins [b. ~1475] is supported by both timing and geography: George appears in the 1523–1524 Surrey Lay Subsidy rolls in Godalming and Betchworth, aligning with Ellen's presence in Egham. She is the same person as Ellen Hitchis, who married John Hogkins on 2 Nov 1560 in Southwark St Saviour, Surrey. This makes her married to her 6th cousin and she as a descendant of Andrew Hawkins and he as a descendant of his brother Stephen Hotchkiss.

!Notes: Ellen likely entered her marriage to John shortly after the death of his first wife, Margery, who appears to have died from childbirth complications. It is possible that Ellen herself had recently been widowed and had a nursing infant, making her an ideal and urgently needed partner in a time when infant survival depended on immediate maternal care. In early modern families, when a mother died leaving a newborn, it was common practice to search urgently for a woman who could provide milk and support. Given the upheaval in the household, it would be no surprise if Katherine’s baptism was delayed or overlooked for a time.
