Note: The "Hattermerchants and Hurers" in London refers to the medieval London guilds of hat-makers, specifically the

Hatter-merchants [makers/sellers of felt hats] and the Hurers [fur-hat makers], who eventually merged around 1501 to form a stronger guild for hat-making, controlling trade and quality, especially as Dutch makers arrived, linking to the later "mad as a hatter" phrase due to mercury use in felting.

=======================================

!Note: While Robert is not linked to the 1589 Yorkshire property transaction involving Robert Hawkyns, the Hawkins family did hold land in Yorkshire in the 14th century.

In 1320, Andrew Haukyn of Preston in Holderness held land jointly with his brother Stephen; the estate passed to his daughter Margery and her husband Robert de Wasingdon.

Andrew’s sons, Richard [~1300] and John [~1310], returned to Kent, but may have retained or later reacquired Yorkshire holdings.

The 1589 fine [involving Rufforth, Knapton, More Monkton, and Hessey] may reflect distant Hawkins family interests, possibly originating in this northern cadet line.

Nature and Situation of the Property

4 messuages with lands in Rufforthe, and common pasturage in

Rufforthe, Knapton, Moremunckton, and Hessey.

Note: Placed here as a possible record of one of Robert Hawkins’ as-yet-unidentified descendants. The 1589 Yorkshire fine references Robert Hawkyns as a co-plaintiff concerning property in Rufforth, Knapton, More Monkton, and Hessey—locations historically linked to earlier Hawkins landholding activity in Yorkshire. No direct generational link has yet been established.
