Research Notes

Birth: About 1510 based on birth of second son c1549. His second son was by his second wife,[5] so he was more likely to be closer to 40 than 30 at the time of Arthur's birth. A merged profile had birth as 1512, but no source.
Death: Changed from "about 1509" to "about 1556" based on his oldest son succeeding him c1556.[4] A merged profile had death as c1550, but no source.
Ancestry: The 1509 death date, paired with birth in 1476, are from Ancestry, which also named his wife as "Joyce Gwynne".[10]
Wives "Joan or Joyce"
The History of Parliament Online biographies have John and Arthur as sons of Matthew's second wife "Joan or Joyce" and describe Joyce as the daughter of "Evan Gwyn of Mynachdy, Rad."[5] The excerpt cited for "Matheus ap Thomas ap Rees, ar."[1] also names two wives for Matthew:
Joyce, daughter of Ieuan Gwynne of Mynachdy, and mother of John and Arthur
Jane, daughter of Llewelyn Vaughan, and mother of Catherine who married Thomas Tannatt, sheriff [of Montgomeryshire] in 1570.[1]
Jane and Joan are often given as the name of the same person in this period, as Joan was frequently written as Jone.
Elizabeth Blayney
A merge added another wife, Elisabeth Blayney. Her profile has since been detached, as there is no evidence that he was married to a Blayney.
