Biography

John Baskerville was a son of Sir Walter Baskerville, knight, of Bredwardine.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]

His mother was Elizabeth Lacy, daughter of John de Lacy and Margaret de Besyn.[1][2][3][6][9][10]

After the death of Sir Walter Baskerville around 1350, Elizabeth married Sir John de Delves.[1][2][3][11]

John was noted as the heir of his mother in her Inquisition Post Mortem. She had died on 8 November 1361 and John was recorded as age 11.[1]

Cryssech. The manor , held for life of the inheritance of Elizabeth late the wife of Walter Baskervill, knight, by gift of the said Elizabeth, the reversion belonging to John son of the said Walter and Elizabeth, a minor. It is held of the heir of Roger de Mortuo Mari, late earl of March, a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service. The extent includes 2 plots of meadow, worth 6s. 8d. and 40d. a year respectively when they are not prevented from being mown and carried by the overflowing of the Severn, a plot of pasture called ‘le Moor,’ and a weir in the Severn.

Pykethorn. The manor, held of the king in chief by service of rendering 16d. yearly at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff. He held it as guardian by the king’s commitment during the minority of John son of the said Walter Baskervill.

Lauton. A parcel of land and rent, held of the heir of Roger de Mortuo Mari, late earl of March, a minor in the king’s wardship, by knight’s service. He held it as guardian, as above.

The said John Baskervill, aged 19 1/2 years, is his heir to the manor of Crissech.

Helyden. The manor, held jointly with Katharine his wife, who survives, to them and his heirs and assigns, by gift and feoffment of Richard Spark, chaplain. It is held of the barony of Brimmesfeld by service of rendering a rose yearly at Midsummer.

He died on 3 April last. John his son, aged 2 years on 2 August last, is his heir.

Lauton. A messuage, a carucate of land, 4a. meadow, 4a. several pasture and 6s. 8d. rent of assise, held of the king in chief by service of grand serjeanty. Pikethorn. A messuage, a carucate of land, 2a. meadow and 13s. rent of assise, held of the king in chief by service of rendering 16d. yearly at the Exchequer by the hands of the sheriff.

Crissech. At one time of his life he held the manor of Crissech of the earl of March by knight’s service. Before his death he enfeoffed thereof Alexander de Bayton, Robert de Breodon, John Williames and Richard Spark, chaplains, and their heirs, on condition that they should pay to Margery de Capenhurst, out of the first profits received therefrom, 100l. which she formerly lent him, and that they should enfeoff the son or daughter born of Katharine his wife, then pregnant, when it should come of age, of the said manor, and that when the said Margery had been satisfied of the 100l. they should distribute the residue of the profits of the manor for his soul and the soul of Elizabeth his mother. Thus the feoffment was made collusively.

He died on 3 April, 48 Edward III. John his son, aged 2 years on 2 August last, is his heir.

Since his death the said feoffees have had possession of the manor of Crissech and received the issues thereof, save that the aforesaid Katharine has a third part of the manor by way of dower. The premises in Lauton and Pikethorn are still in the king’s hand, and the escheators have to answer for the issues thereof since the death of the said John son of Walter.

HEREFORD. Inquistion taken at Webbeleye, 9 February, 6 Richard II [1382/1383]

The under-mentioned tenements came into the hands of Edward III by the death of John son of Walter Baskervill, knight, and by reason of the minority of John, his son and heir. Edward III granted the custody of them until the lawful age of the said heir, and so from heir to heir until one of them should reach full age, to David Holgrave of the county of Salop by letters patent [at a rent of 40 marks yearly. Afterwards David granted all his estate in the custody to William Huggeford. David and William have had possession of the premises until now.

4 March 1370/1371: John Baskerville, son and heir of Walter Baskerville and of Elizabeth late his wife who was wife of John de Delves, to have seisin of the lands of his said father and mother. The said John has proved his age.[16]

16 April 1375: Grant to the king's esquire, John Roos, of the 40 marks which the keeper or farmer of the lands late of John son Walter Baskervyll, 'chivaler'.[17]

10 February 1377/1378: .. lands late of John son of Walter Baskervill, knight, tenant in chief, to that king’s esquire, John Roos, who granted the same for a sum of money to the said Roger and surrendered the aforesaid letters patent into chancery. For 40s. paid in the hanaper.[18]

26 February 1382/1383: Confirmation in favour of William Huggerford, of the grant, to him by David Holgrave of the county of Salop, of the custody, during the minority, of the heir, of the two parts of the lands late of John son of Walter Baskervill, knight.[19]

28 October 1383: .. lands late of John, son of Walter Baskervill, knight, deceased, during the minority of John son and heir of the said John. John son and heir of John died a minor leaving Thomas son of Robert de Fouleshurst, also a minor, his heir.[20]

Close Roll 1390

28 August 1390: To Edward Acton escheator in Salop. Order to Thomas son of Robert de Fouleshurst, which Robert was son of Margaret, sister of John, son of Walter Baskerville knight father of John son of John Baskerville, being cousin and heir of the said John, son of John, seisin of the lands of John son of Walter, John son of John having died within age in ward of the king; as the said Thomas has proved his age before John Leche of Cestre escheator of Cheshire, and the king has taken his homage and fealty. Like writ to John Skidemore escheator in Herefordshire.[7]

The Close Roll of 1390 appears to be in error in describing Robert as the son of Margaret Baskerville.

26 November 1440[9]: To the Escheator of Salop. To deliver three fourths of the manor of Cressege to Richard Duke of York. In the time of Edward II Elizabeth Lacy was seised of the manor and she married Walter Baskerville. They had two children John and Margaret. John Baskerville died without issue [John did have a son but he died a minor]. Margaret the sister of John entered the same and was married to Robert Fouleshurst. The manor descended to Thomas Fouleshurst her son and then to his son Thomas, son of Thomas Fouleshurst, son of Thomas [should be Thomas, son of Thomas, son of Robert]. Thomas, son of Thomas, married Isabel who was then living. After his death a fourth part was assigned to Isabel in dower and three fourths to John son and heir of Thomas, son of Thomas. After the death of John the three fourths descended to William Fouleshurst, brother of John. William died without issue and there is no heir of Elizabeth Lacy yet living.
