Note 1

!Stylename: Hotchkiss / Hawkins, John, Baliff to the King and Merchant of York [~1400 - aft. 1463]

!Note: John Hawkins [~1400-aft. 1463], Freeman of York, Skinner, Shipman, King’s Bailiff, and Royal Tax Commissioner.

Born in Yorkshire, John was the son of John Hawkins de Hakenshaghe and grandson of Ralph Hawkins of Ramsbury, Wiltshire. He married Katherine around 1415 and appears with her in a 1417 plea of covenant. Around 1417–18, he was admitted as a freeman skinner in the City of York. Their son Simon Hawkins, born circa 1430, later relocated to Northamptonshire. By the 1430s, John was active in Crown service: appointed as a royal tax commissioner in North Wales in 1437 and serving as King’s Bailiff in Shropshire in 1438. In 1439, he was admitted again as a freeman of York, this time as a shipman. His will was written in 1463 in Acaster Malbis, Yorkshire. John’s wide-ranging career reflects the transitional generation of the Hawkins family, bridging local merchant activity and royal service, and extending the family’s presence well beyond its roots in Kent and Shropshire.
