Biography

Joan Sudeley was born about 1326 at Sudeley Castle, Gloucestershire.[citation needed]

This person and her parentage are recorded in the Sudeley entry in the Complete Peerage - the Complete Peerage is normally considered to be a very reliable source

Joan was the daughter of John, the son of Matilda, who was the sister of Elizabeth who married de Frevylle, and they were the daughters of John married to Alice, the daughter of William de la Plaunche, who was the son of Peter de Montfort.[1]

Joan de Sudeley married Sir William 'the Elder' le Boteler, 2nd Lord Boteler, son of Sir William le Boteler, 1st Lord Boteler of Wem and Beatrice, circa 1354.[2]

Joan was the mother of:

Thomas Boteller of Sudle;[1]

Joan de Sudeley died before 11 August 1367.[3]

In 8 Richard II , in Nottinghamshire at Easter, Thomas Boteller of Sudle and Baldwyn de Frevylle, Kt, sued Thomas de Stafford, Kt, and Nicholas de Stafford, Kt, for the manors of Gunthorp and Loudham.[1] Baldwin and Thomas gave this pedigree:

Posting by Douglas Richardson. Despite the ramblings of Burke's, which Stirnet fails to sort out, there is only one possible explanation for Thomas inheriting Sudeley but not Wem: his mother was the 2nd wife of a man who already had a male heir by his 1st wife.
