Notes

Note 1

!Note: Posthumous Baptism and Sussex Connections

Andrew was born in Somerset around September 1539, shortly after the death of his father, John Hawkins, in January 1539 [Gregorian] / 1538 [Julian] in Staffordshire. His mother, Dyonice, died two months later from complications of childbirth.

John, a clothier of Kentish origin, had business ties across Sussex and Surrey, appearing in Midhurst as early as 1531 in a registered will — an indication of active local presence, not mere travel.

The baptism of Andrew took place on 15 February 1540 [Julian] in Rye, Sussex, a coastal town along familiar trading routes. It likely reflects an emergency relocation to relatives or trade contacts near Kent.

John and Dyonice’s eldest daughter Anne, mentioned in her grandmother Agnes Hakyns’s 1537 will as recipient of her “best gowne and kyrtyll,” would have been about 20 at the time and plausibly assumed responsibility for her infant brother.

This baptism, timed after both parents' deaths and held in a neighboring county with known family connections, exemplifies the flexible kinship strategies typical of the merchant class during times of upheaval.

!Note: 1539–1542 in England - Context:

This period saw major disruption from the Dissolution of the Monasteries, which shuttered not just religious houses but also church-run hospitals, schools, and poor relief. The fallout from the Pilgrimage of Grace led to executions and heightened tension in the north. Combined with land seizures, Cromwell’s fall, royal instability, and sporadic disease outbreaks, the result was widespread displacement, hardship, and family fragmentation. These conditions likely explain the high rate of early deaths, remarriages, and child relocations during this time.
