Edward Herbert served under his cousin William Herbert, 1st earl of Pembroke, against the western rebels in Edward VI's reign [1] and later led 500 men from mid-Wales against the French under Mary . He received from his cousin William the lordship of Cherbury.

-

Through his Pembroke connection he gained the patronage of Robert Dudley, earl of Leicester and became the keeper of Holt Castle and the lordship of Bromfield and Yale in Denbighshire , later also becoming keeper of the lordship of Powis and constable of Montgomery Castle.[1] He was sheriff of Montgomery in 1557 and again in 1568,[2] and represented Montgomery in every Parliament but three from 1553-1588.

-

Although he was squire of the body to Queen Elizabeth, he was regarded as being loyal to Mary, Queen of Scots.[1] Edward Herbert was a crusader against thieves and outlaws in mid-Wales and became quite prosperous, building a mansion known as Llys-mawr, or Blackhall, where he entertained lavishly.

-

Edward Herbert married Elizabeth , a daughter of Matthew Price of Newtown, Montgomeryshire. He had eleven children.[1]

-

His will was drawn up shortly before his death on 30 April 1593, and proved on 8 June 1594. The heir was his son Richard but some land in Montgomeryshire and the Merioneth interests went to his second son, Matthew. Other beneficiaries included one of his three illegitimate sons, another Richard. Herbert left £2 for the repair of Montgomery church, where he was buried, and a £5 annuity to the bailiff and burgesses of that town for the maintenance of a schoolmaster. The sum was payable out of lands in Coedmor and Pantynnen which Herbert had purchased from his nephew, Richard Herbert of Park. Three of his legitimate sons—Richard, Matthew and Charles—acted as executors, and the overseers were his kinsman, Sir Edward Herbert, who, despite their rivalry, had supported him in the 1588 election contest; Richard Herbert of Park; Richard Morrice; Hugh Owen; and Hugh Lloyd [3]
