Biography
Joan was the daughter of a Nicholas Poyntz and wife of Richard Baskerville. Her father's first name is given by the Feet of Fines entries below: his identity is uncertain. There are at least two possible candidates:
Nicholas Poyntz, son of Hugh Poyntz
"Nicholas Poyntz, son of Puncius de la Launde Pennine", named in a deed of 1317[1]
It has been stated that in 14 Edward II [1320-1321] Richard Baskerville married Jane/Joan Poyntz, daughter of Sir Nicholas Poyntz , Knight.[2][3][4][5]
Sir Nicholas Poyntz had died in 1311.[6]

Parties: Richard de Baskreuill' and Philippe, his wife, querents, and Edmund fitz Johan and Adam Lucas, deforciants.

Action: Plea of covenant.
Agreement: Richard and Philippe have acknowledged the manor to be the right of Edmund, as that which Edmund and Adam have of their gift. For this: Edmund and Adam have granted to Richard and Philippe the manor, excepting 12 acres of land and 300 acres of wood in the manor, and have rendered it to them in the court, to hold to Richard and Philippe, of the chief lords for the lives of Richard and Philippe. And after the decease of Richard and Philippe the manor shall remain to Richard, son of Walter de Baskreuill, and Joan, daughter of Nicholas Poyntz, and the heirs begotten by Richard on the body of Joan, to hold of the chief lords for ever. In default of such heirs, remainder to the right heirs of the aforesaid Richard de Baskreuill'.

Agreement: Richard and Philippe have granted to Joan the manor and have rendered it to her in the court, to hold to Joan, of Richard and Philippe and the heirs of Richard for the life of Joan, rendering yearly 1 rose at the feast of the Nativity of St John the Baptist, and doing to the chief lords all other services. And after the decease of Joan the manor shall remain to Richard, son of Walter de Baskreuill, and the heirs of his body, to hold of Richard and Philippe and the heirs of Richard, by the aforesaid services for ever. In default of such heirs, the manor shall revert to Richard de Baskreuill' and Philippe and the heirs of Richard, quit of the heirs of Joan and also of the other heirs of Richard, son of Walter, to hold of the chief lords for ever.
Warranty: Warranty by Richard de Baskreuill' and his heirs. For this: Joan has given them 40 pounds sterling.

Father
Melville's The Ancestry of John Whitney suggests that Joan was the daughter of Sir Richard Poines , Knight,[9] or possibly the daughter of Sir Nicholas Poyntz/Poynings.[10][11] The Feet of Fines entries given above show her father was called Nicholas.
