!Note: Kemmerling name seems to be Dutch. All Kemmerlings located so far are either in the U.S. or in Burgerlijke Stand, Arnhem, Gelderland, Netherlands. Katherine arived in the U.S. in 1856. Katherine listed her parents as being born in Prussi a, Germany, but this is not inconsistant with the state of affairs in Europe at the time. Germany at the time was not a nation, but rather a whole collection of separate little kingdoms. Prussia was warlike, and its borders shifted greatly.
!Notes: From Rex Hotchkiss. 1900 U.S. Census reported that she came to the U.S. in 1856, and had given birth to 14 children, of which 7 were still living.
!Notes: From Rex Hotchkiss. Searching for a German girl named Katherine, who was 19 in 1860, and lived in Mineral Point, where she might have met William Kemmerling, gives only one result: Catharine Shafer, of Luxenberg, Germany, the young wife o f a cabinet maker from Nassau named Joseph Shafer. She was 19. He was 30. Could this young wife have become a young widow and then met John Norman? Note: At this time all of the small countries to the east of France were listed as "Germany".

!Notes: From Phyllis Grissom. Kathering married Wilhelm KEMMERLING-[1](5) [MRIN:1], son of Jacob KEMMERLING-[321], in 1862. Wilhelm was born in Nov 1825 in Fuerstenberg, Germany,6, 7 died on 8 Jan 1901 in Mineral Point, Iowa County, Wisconsin A t age 75, and was buried in St. Paul's Cemetery, Minteral Point, Iowa County, Wisconsin.
!Notes: From Phyllis Grissom. Vivienne Trace has the a copy of the original of obituary for Katherine Burghardt Kemmerling.. She also states that Katherine came to America at the age of 11. 6 of Katherine's children died before her.
!Notes: From Phyllis Grissom. There is a picture of Katherine with a gentleman. The notation on the back of the picture says."Grandmother Kemmerling brother Uncle Henry from Iowa. Believe the picture belonged to Sister Carissima, daughter of Joh n Norman and Catherine Kemmerling,[daughter of the above Katherine - When Sister Carissima felt she was close to her death, she divided up all the pictures she had gathered over the years. she sent packets to each of her nieces and nephews. This p icture of her Grandmother Kemmerling with her Uncle William is from the packet sent to Don Kuelper of Rockford, Ill. No last name was given for "Uncle Henry". Since the name Burghardt has been established as the maiden name of Katherine, is it i s supposed that her brother would also be a Burghardt.

She is single and was born in the State of Wisconsin - Kemmerling, W illiam - He is the son of William Kemmerling and was born in December of 1877. He is 22 years of age and is single. !Obituary: Mineral Point Tribune dated September 3, 1931 [information from Vivienne Trace, provided by Phyllis Grissom.] OBITUARY - KEMMERLING. - Last week’s Tribune noted the death of Mrs. Catherine Burghardt - Kemmerling, which occurred on the 2 5th of August at her home in this city, at the age of 87 years and 2 months. - Few indeed are those who have lived so many hours of devotion for the welfare and happiness of all with whom she came in contact as did Mrs. Kemmerling. It is the live s of such good people that make earthly existence a pleasure. - Catherine Burghardt was born in Germany and came to this country when 11 years of age. Here she became the wife of William Kemmerling, an Industrious, good citizen who preceded her i n death 32 years ago; six children also passed on to the mysterious beyond before the mother. The children surviving are; Mrs. P. Reger and Mrs. Albert Roether of Mineral Point, William of Janesville, Conrad of Rockford, and Theresa at home; a lso 19 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, most of whom although in other cities in this state, Illinois and Michigan, were present for the funeral services. Grandsons and great-grandsons served as pallbearers. - Mrs. Kemmerling was the las t member of a good sized family of Burghardt. Funeral services were held at St. Mary’s church last Thursday morning at 10 o’clock with Fr. Joerres officiating. Burial was made in St. Mary’s Cemetery beside that of her husband.
