!Note: Parish records show christening name as Cornelius Hodgecase. Expect that the one christening record with parents illegible except the name Hodgecase for Cornelius in 12 Mar 1797 is this Cornelius. Name at marriage was recorded as Corneliu
s Hotchkiss. Occupation was coalminor. This is assuredly the same last name. However, the priests in the two parishes spelled the name differently. Earlier records show occasional occurances of Hodgecase in Bothkennar, and Occurances of the sam
e man with the same wife, with his name spelled both ways. Census of Scotland 1871 lists his birthplace as Airth and his age as 77. Census of Scotland 1851 lists birthplace as Airth & age as 48. Census of 1841 lists age as 40, but Tom Paterson t
ells me that the 1841 census was supposed to round all ages over 15 down to nearest 5 term. There being only a limited number of possible Corneliuses recorded as being born, from which he certainly must have been one, I for the longest time thoug
ht he went with the one who was born closest to about 1802. However, the above information, and viewing the death certificates of both Corneliuses, given to me by Tom Paterson, finally settled the question.

!Note: I am making a guess that Cornelius mother died in childbirth. This may be the reason his christening and death certificate did not list his mother, and could also account for the names of his 1st daughter being the same as the mother who r
aised him, and his second the same as his wive's mother and his natural mother.
