!Note: 1957 Hotchkiss family picnic list, gravestone & Kansas State Census of 1890 show birthdate at Dec 1, 1831. However, this is contrary to documentation in Scotland (Marriage Record), which shows a birthdate of 2 Feb 1834, and is more likel y to be accurate.
!Note: Edward and Margaret immigrated to the United States and Burlingame, Osage County, Kansas in 1884 with all of their children , except Cornelius, William and Annie who preceded them in 1880. They established their homes east of the railroad tracks in Burlingame, along Switztler Creek, in what became known as Scotch Row. Edward and Margaret lived in a 3 room house with a bay window, which they referred to as "the big house", on the we st end of the street, next to the railroad tracks. Their three married children lived in the other three houses on the street, which at the time was little more than a trail on the open prairie.

Edward Hotchkiss, a resident of Burlingame for twenty-eight years, died at his home here Monday morning, January 15th, at 3:00 o'clock. Mr. Hotchkiss was eighty-one years old and had been in very poor health for six months past. He was born at C arronshore, near Falkirk, Stirlingshire, Scotland, in December, 1831. In 1855 he was married to Miss Margaret Penman who together with four sons and four daughters survive him. They are Neal, Alexander, James, Edward Jr., Mrs. Rebbecca Foster, an d Mrs. Anna Wilson, of this city; Mrs. Mary Washington, of Columbus, Kansas, and Mrs. Margaret Sharp, of Scammon, Kas.

Mr Hotchkiss worked in the coal mines in Scotland until August 1884, when he came with his family to Burlingame, and this place has been his home continuously since. He was the father of ten children, two of whom preceded him to the eternal hom e beyond. Besides his own children he leaves fifty three grandchildren and thirty-five great-grandchildren, making a total of ninety-six living decendants. The funeral was held at the home Tuesday, January 16 at 2 p. m., conducted by Rev. Schaib le of the Presbyterian church, after which interment took place in the Burlingame cemetery.

Mr. Hotchkiss was a good citizen and good neighbor. He bore the enviable reputation of always dealing squarely and honestly with his fellow man. He worked hard all his life, or until afflicted by age and infirmity. He has gone to his reward. P eaceful be his rest. --
