His wife was Sarah Jane Hamilton, who he married in Armagh, Ireland. The date has not been found. Their seven known children were Annie (c1849-?), Sarah Jane (c1850-?), Margaret (c1854-?), Martha (1857-1935), Mathew (1859-1906), John Alexander (1860-?) and Katherine M (c1864-?).
