Yesterday my Gramma Harriet Bennett McKamy went to her Eternal Home. She never lost her love for life and people, even after 4 years of being basically bed and chair-bound in a Nursing Home. She made it home, appreciated short visits when we could make it and got to know and loved the staff at Crowell Home.

My Grandma was a strong woman. Almost 6’ tall, sturdy, strong-willed, she was a presence. Her life was not always easy, she lost her mother at a young age and 2 sons shortly after their birth. She lived her last 20+ years with severe COPD joint and terrible bone and nerve pain. But she rarely every complained. Instead she played poker with the ‘young girls’ , bowled until she couldn’t, drove to Norfolk to meet us half way into her 90’s and boarded the bus to the Casinos as long as her health would allow it.

She loved sports. All sports, especially Football—Huskers and the NFL. She was excited to watch Cade play on TV this fall. She did make a Westside game to watch him play when he was a Freshman and got to a couple of wrestling meets and other sporting events. She loved every second of it.

Mostly, though, she loved her family fiercely. She had a special bond with her 3 sisters, 2 of whom who have passed but lived into their late 80s+. Her youngest sister, Aunt Barbara, called to visit weekly. She was so proud of my mom, the family she raised and her career as a Nurse. She adored my Uncle Jerry who took such good care of her later in life. Lance and I were her only 2 grandchildren and we always looked forward to going to O’Neill for a short holiday visit or for a week during the summer. We were blessed that for so many years, our kids got to enjoy the fun O’Neill trips. Gramma was always excited to have all 7 there, and always glad to see all 7 leave 😂 Her goal was to live long enough to see the oldest Zach graduate, but she made it to see 4 of the 7.

I imagine that yesterday Grandpa Don was there to welcome her home. She and Aunt Dorothy and Aunt Ethel hugged, and then started bickering at each other. And then they all sat down with Hank and Eva, her childhood friend since grade school, to have a intense game of cards with a Budweiser. Cheers 🍻 to a great life Gramma. We will cherish all of our memories and miss you so much❤️
