He had two marriages/partners. His first wife was Georgina Janet Dunmore-Napiers, who he married on 5 DEC 1861 in Strathblane, Stirlingshire, Scotland. Their six known children were Hotchkiss (1862-1862), James Napier (1863-?), Richard James (1866-?), Robert Dunmore (1867-1946), Caroline Francis (1868-?) and John Graham (1870-?).

His second wife was Mary Anna Young, who he married on 12 OCT 1875 in Ayr, Ayrshire, Scotland. Their ten known children were Denholm (1876-1902), Margaret Annie (1878-?), Isobel (1879-?), George (1881-1901), Montgomery H (1883-?), Anna Mary (1885-?), Catherine (1886-?), Archibald (1889-?), Thomas Finlay (1892-?) and Gilbert (1894-?).

!Source: Margaret Hotchkiss nee Hart's will and her inventory after death. His rank was Captain and Adjitant of the Third Administrative Battalion Renfrewshire Rifle Volunteer, at time of her death. There was a family diamond ring given by King Richard the 1st to one of the Hotchkiss Family who was "Lord Mair" of London. This was willed to Richard to go down in straight male line from Richard.
